Benefits Of Calcium
Orotate
Calcium orotate is a highly usable form of calcium
supplement due to the particular abilities of the molecule
calcium is bound to in this preparation. That molecule is
called orotic acid, and when calcium combines with it, a
mineral salt is made which "penetrates the outer cell membrane
... and is only metabolized at the site of the membranes of the
mitochondria and of the structures found in the cell plasma.
Only here the mineral will be released to the form of an ion."

What this is saying is that the calcium in calcium orotate
supplements is carried directly into the cell, and is deposited
deeper into the cell compared to other types of biological
transports. The above article was discussing orotic acid
compared to AEP (2-aminoethylphosphoric acid) and aspartic
acid, though these are not necessarily what is used in other
types of calcium supplements, which commonly use mineral
aspartates and other carriers.
Dr Hans Nieper
This information is taken from articles by Dr Hans Nieper, a
German doctor who used these types of supplements in his
clinic. Dr Nieper passed away in 1998. He was known as an
oncologist and cardiologist, although he also had experience in
treating patients with MS. Whilst he was a German clinician who
didn't really write and publish material in medical journals,
he was known worldwide for his more unconventional work in
these areas.
It's important to note that Dr Nieper was not a mainstream
doctor in terms of the accepted ideologies regarding the areas
he practiced in. And there are not really clinical trials to
back up his work, as it was ignored by mainstream medical
science for many years.
However, it would be wrong to simply dismiss him as a
'quack'. He was a legitimate doctor who actually worked with
patients, as opposed to simply research. And he had success
with many, as did those colleagues who used his ideas on their
own patients.
There are some great articles on Dr Nieper here, and here.
He was well known in celebrity circles too, for
what it is worth:
"Dr. Nieper's patients included many world stars,
royalty and politicians: Anthony Quinn, John Wayne, Yul
Brynner, William Holden and Princess Caroline of Monaco. He
advised the ailing ex-president Ronald Reagan. But more
importantly, he treated thousands of everyday people like
you and me. Nancy Sinatra lavished praise on this great
German physician: "He is a fabulous person, a recognized
scientist, a marvelous doctor." His patients both loved and
respected him."
Is his hypothesis on calcium orotate and other mineral
transporters correct? I'll quote two sources, and let you make
up your own mind:
"Ultimately the value of Nieper’s work on mineral
transporters does not depend upon whether his theories and
explanations were valid, or upon whether his observations
were biased, or upon the rulings of the government or the
medical cartel. It depends only upon whether the
transporters work when you use them. Many users are quite
convinced that their lives or health have been rescued by
these supplements, and this alone justifies their existence
in the marketplace."

"For now I'll just state my summary conclusions: There
is independent scientific evidence corroborating Nieper's
theory of orotates as mineral transporters. In my judgment,
the evidence tends to support Nieper's criteria for orotate
as an electrolyte carrier, namely, (1) a low dissociation
constant, (2) an affinity for specific cellular systems or
organs, and (3) a metabolic pathway which liberates the
transported mineral within the targeted organ or system.

Calcium Orotate
Dr Nieper believed, based primarily on medical intuition and
his experience with, and observation of his own patients,
that:
- Calcium orotate protects the body from
arteriosclerosis
- Calcium orotate is able to be utilized by people who
have problems with calcium metabolism due to a defective
transport system into their own cells.
- Calcium orotate has a beneficial effect on
cartilage tissue and all tissue that uses
the pentose pathway. Parts of the body that use the pentose
pathway, which is a form of cellular metabolism,
include:
-
- cartilage
- ligaments
- connective tissue
- skin
- walls of blood vessels
- part of the veins in the blood-brain
barrier
- part of the heart tissue relating to
stimulation and regulation
- hair, nails and other keratin related
tissue
- bone
- heart muscle
- and in liver cells and the stroma.
- Calcium orotate is great for decalcification in
the spine, having been used in some very serious
spinal bone injuries in Germany with success. It's also
great for fractures, and has been used in Germany for
various bone related diseases like osteochondrosis,
Bechterew disease, osteoporosis, disk degeneration, and
recalcification of bone in cancers with bone
metastases.
- Calcium orotate prevents cortisone side
effects with regards cartilage damage: "The orotic
acid plays a very important role to so-called pentose
pathway metabolism which accounts for the metabolism in
cartilage tissue and especially for all organs which
account for aging. There, the ribose coupling needs orotic
add and therefore obviously the orotic carrying molecule
has a high affinity to this kind of tissue, like cartilage
which, so far, we were unable to influence and which
experienced even more damage under the influence of
cortisone. Therefore, calcium orotate seems to me to be one
of the most important substances to prevent cortisone side
effects in, eg, rheumatoid arthritis. This is very
important." (biomedx.com)
- Calcium orotate had a beneficial effect on the
liver:
"Four patients who had taken, on the average, 3g of calcium
orotate in stomach acid resistant capsules per day, for
more than a year, submitted to a liver puncture. (For
reasons which had nothing to do with the application of
calcium orotate.) In all cases there was no sign of fatty
liver development. Quite the contrary, three of the
patients with stage 3 fatty liver showed a remarkable
improvement under long term calcium orotate therapy."
