The Benefits of Taking Vitamin C for Sleep Discussed

The benefits of taking vitamin c for sleep are fairly minimal, and indirect at best.

If your difficulty in sleeping is a result of stress, then taking vitamin c at higher doses than the RDA might help you respond better to the stressor, and hence sleep better. There is an article on About.com that discusses vitamin c in relation to stress.

On a personal level, one benefit ot taking vitamin c for sleep that I have noticed is that when I supplement with vitamins or minerals that I am deficient in, I tend to sleep better, feel more refreshed when I wake up, and generally get out of bed more easily. But this is only my personal experience and observation. Its not a clinical observation. And this applies not just to vitamin c, but whatever I am lacking in. Vitamins as a rule will only be of benefit to the body if you are lacking them to start with.

There are more specific supplements that help with sleep. There is an excellent article on sleep and nutrition here. It mentions melatonin, tryptophan (5htp is a good form of this, and is excellent for sleeping as well as stress and anxiety) and the B vitamins.
