Ginseng and Kids - Is It Safe?

Ginseng and Kids - The General Consensus

Due to the fact that there is not enough evidence to ensure its safety for children under two years of age, ginseng is not recommended for them. For kids over 2 years old, it is suggested ginseng use should only be in consultation with your doctor. Ginseng is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women either.

So that seems fairly straightfoward, however...

Ginseng and Kids - Traditional Approaches in oriental Medicine

One site, on a page dedicated to clearing up the misunderstandings associated with Korean ginseng, tells a very different story (http://www.kgc.or.kr/eng/04r&d/r&d_FAQ.html ). They suggest that ginseng is in fact useful for children with regards weak constitution, and that it can also help in brain development and growth. They do caution against large doses, however, and specify the dosage for kids is 1/3 of the adult dosage.

They may well be right, but the problem for health professionals is that in the abscence of studies on ginseng and kids, caution is prevailing in the general recommendations.

Ginseng has been used in some small trials on ADHD, and may be beneficial. But again, the problem is the lack of studies done on ginseng with children.

Some ginseng preparations may be conatiminated, or have little actual ginseng in them. Consumer lab runs tests on products and publishes their results on their website.
