How do Women Feel About Taking Citracal Calcium Supplements?

To discover how do women feel about taking citracal calcium supplements, its important to look at whether citracal is effective compared to other supplements. And whether the money spent on citracal brings the benefits desired whilst matching personal values.

Citracal is a calcium supplement with vitamin D that is prescribed by your doctor. The possible side effects listed include constipation, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, dry mouth, increased thirst, increased urination. But the same literature says that it is 'well tolerated', so these would be fairly unusual. It gives the valuable advice that you should not take a calcium supplement within 2 hours of taking any tetracycline antibiotics as it can hamper the absorption of the antibiotic.

Interestingly, however, another article cites a study done that compared citracal with a regular commercial calcium supplement, Os-Cal. The study was reported in the Journal Of the American College of Nutrition, and the study was carried out by Dr Robert P. Heaney. When comparing the absorption of citracal with Os-Cal, it was found that both were equally effective. And being a calcium citrate, they are both more effective than other types of calcium, although this wasn't measured in this study.

What is interesting is that Citracal is 1.5 to 1.8 times more expensive than Os-Cal, and you need a doctor's prescription to get it. So how do women feel about taking citracal calcium supplements? If they prefer going through their doctor, either out of security or it is simply easier, they will be happy taking citracal. After all, its a good supplement. And if they don't know they could be saving money with Os-Cal, they will also be happy. But if they don't like going to the doctors, would prefer one less trip, and like saving money, they will be happier taking Os-Cal.

This study was done on post-menopausal women.
