The Zone Diet
Barry Sear's zone diet is not only
one of the few diets/ nutritional plans to closely match the
recommendations of the American Diabetes Association and the
Heart Education group at HeartInfo.org in terms of percentages
of the macronutrients protein, carbohydrate and fat. It is also
effective in losing weight.
Sears was motivated to develop the zone
perfect diet because of his genetic predispostion to heart
disease. Through his research on lipids(fats) he came to
realise the importance of eicosanoids (hormone like
substances that affect the cardiovascular system, the immune
system, and the systems related to fat storage). He
wanted to develop a way of guiding eicosanoid production so
that the favourable, health enhancing eicosanoids were produced
in the body (there are also "bad" eicosanoids). The result of
that ongoing research is the zone diet.
He writes in "Enter The Zone" (pxiv): "It
also occurred to me that since eicosanoids are involved in
virtually everything the body does, controlling them might
represent a new paradign for health and illness. It seemed to
make sense that many of our disease states - heart disease,
diabetes, arthritis, and cancer, to name just a few - might be
the result of imbalances among the eicosanoid hormones."
